ABOUT VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING (VET)

Vocational education and training - otherwise known as VET - is learning that directly relates to getting a job. The VET system delivers ​education and training services for individuals at every stage of their work life. Whether you're a student, a job seeker or already employed, there are a range of training options available to help you achieve your career goals. Accredited training courses are provided by registered training organisations (RTOs), such as TAFE, private training providers and some universities.

Types of qualifications

Vocational education and training qualifications are available at the following levels:

Australian Qualifications Framework

The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) is a unified system of national qualifications in schools, vocational education and training and the higher education sector. You can find more information about the AQF on the Australian Qualifications Framework website.

Training packages and accredited courses

Training packages are:

  • an essential part of Australia's vocational education and training system
  • integrated set of nationally endorsed competency standards
  • assessment guidelines and Australian Quality Framework qualification for a specific industry, industry sector or enterprise.

There are a number of ways to find a suitable registered training organisation.

  • Queensland Skills Gateway - search for training organisations by location, qualification, or industry, including information on the organisations approved to deliver Queensland Government funded training.
  • Queensland Training Information Service - search for registered training organisations that provide government funded training for Queensland apprenticeships and traineeships.
  • Australian Apprenticeships - search for an Australian Apprenticeship Support Network to assist in funding a training provider to suit your needs.
  • Skills training.gov.au - search on the National Register of VET.
  • My Skills - search the Australian directory of training for courses and training providers.
